SSYP Volunteers for Special Olympics
On Saturday, June 19th, the South Shore Young Professionals made its first ever trip to the Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games at Harvard Stadium. Special Olympics Massachusetts, a leader in providing healthy lifestyles through sports and healthcare-related programs year-round for individuals with intellectual disabilities, hosted over 2,000 athletes and 1,200 volunteers at the 2010 Games. Sports for the weekend included athletics (track and field events), aquatics, power lifting, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics and roller-skating.
Our group of volunteers was stationed at the track and field venue where we escorted the athletes to their races and then to the awards tent to receive their medals. A group of us were also stationed at the awards tent where we announced the winning times and handed out medals. All in all, it was an unbelievable day and a great experience for our group of volunteers.
We look forward to partnering with Special Olympics Massachusetts in the future, so if you were unable to volunteer at this event, it won’t be our last!
Thank you to all who so generously donated their time on a Saturday in June to such a worthy cause.
